ACNA CONVENTION

For the third time, the Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Assn. of Greater Los Angeles (APOGLA) hosted the Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Council of North America (ACNA) Convention from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2, 2012. The four-day confab was held at the Valencia-based Hyatt Regency in Santa Clarita. This was announced by APOGLA President Emma Rubina-Galang and Cora De Jesus, president of ACNA who is based in British Columbia, Canada.

This 11th biennial convention, chaired by Art Rivera of APOGLA is the largest gathering of APO-Philippines alumni members who are based in North America. It has aptly adopted the slogan “It’s Always Fun In L.A” to showcase LA’s various fun theme parks, fine beach resorts, its multi-cultural embrace and as the movie capital of the world. The convention theme was aptly billed, “ACNA Relevant... More Than Ever.”

Approximately 300 alumni brothers and sisters descended on Santa Clarita north of Los Angeles from various alumni associations in North America, such as APO-Alberta, APO-British Columbia, APO-Calgary, APO-District of Columbia, APO-Florida, APO-Greater Los Angeles, APO-Greater New York, APO-Central Valley California, APO-Hawaii, APO-Hollywood, APO-Midwest-Chicago, APO-Northern California, APO-Metro Houston, APO-Las Vegas, APO-Southern Ontario, APO-Montreal, APO-San Diego, APO-South Bay, APO-Toronto, APO-Mississauga, APO-San Francisco/Silicon Valley, APO-Dallas Forth Worth and APO-Washington State and Greater Washington-APO (GWAPO). Guests from the APO-Philippines are also expected to attend.

ACNA President Cora De Jesus called convention to order. Thereafter, a review and approval of minutes of the last Council meeting was done. This was followed by the Treasurer’s Report by Bro. Bems Domingcil and the Auditor’s Report by Bro. Thom Pascual.

In the afternoon, convention delegates convened again for the plenary session with workshops/ seminars and resolutions. The workshop topics include: The role of the Librado I. Ureta Foundation in ACNA, Conducting a successful service project, Growth, conflicts and change in organizations and ACNA and administration of alumni associations.
The elections for the incoming ACNA officers for development years 2013-2014 were then held, with Bro. Lito Tarculas of APO-GLA winning the Presidency. He will be joined by Sis. Irma Almazan, President of APO-Hollywood as 1st Vice-President, Bro. Mariano Abbariao of APO-Greater New York as the 2nd Vice- President and Bro. Later that night, APO-GLA was voted the winner in 2 out of 3 categories of the ACNA sponsored Leadership, Friendship and Service Awards, winning the Outstanding Leadership Award in the over 50-member Alumni Association and the Gene Licauco Memorial Friendship Award in the over 50-member Alumni Association, for its entry, proving once again that the award for the Best Foreign APO Alumni Association the year before by APO Philippines was no fluke.
